A backup is a saved set of data used to restore a website after a failure, mistake or loss of information. A complete Joomla website backup normally includes both files and a database captured in a consistent state.
What a website backup contains
Files include Joomla, extensions, the template, images and configuration. The database stores articles, users, menus and other records. Files alone or a database alone may not be enough to restore the entire site. Review exclusions in the backup settings.
Email, server configuration, DNS and external storage may fall outside an application backup and need a separate plan. If an archive has multiple parts, retain the complete set.
Planning backups

Testing restoration
Periodically restore a copy in a separate environment without affecting the live site. Check login, content, images and important workflows. Disable real mailings, payments and other external actions on the test copy.
A “backup completed” message does not prove the website can be recovered. Record the last successful restoration test, required access and recovery time.
