noindex is a directive telling a supporting search engine not to include a page in its index. In Joomla, it is used for pages that should not appear in search results.
Ways to set noindex
For HTML, use a robots meta tag in the head section, for example with the content noindex, follow. Another option is the X-Robots-Tag HTTP response header. A header also works for resources without an HTML document, such as PDF files.
The crawler needs to receive the response and read the directive. If robots.txt blocks the URL, noindex may go unnoticed. An indexed page does not disappear immediately: the change must be processed after another crawl.
Joomla settings
Joomla can provide Robots settings at several levels, including global configuration and individual articles. Extensions and the server may add tags or headers too. Inspect the final response rather than relying on one administrator field.
Before launching Joomla after development, check the home page, categories, articles and both language versions. An accidental global noindex can exclude useful pages. After removing the directive, also confirm that crawlers can access the URL.
Related rules
Canonical identifies a preferred URL among similar pages, while Disallow controls crawling. Noindex has a different purpose: exclusion from the index. It does not restrict visitor access or protect personal data. Private sections require authentication and permission checks.
Conclusion
noindex supports deliberate control of search visibility. Checking tags, headers and crawl access helps prevent accidental exclusion.
