An HTTP status code is a three-digit number in a server response that describes the result of a request. On a Joomla website, it helps distinguish a successful page load from a redirect, an access problem or a server failure.
HTTP status code classes
- 1xx — interim informational responses.
- 2xx — successful processing. For example, 200 OK indicates a successful response and 201 Created indicates that a resource was created.
- 3xx — redirects and other responses related to selecting a representation. Codes 301 and 308 indicate permanent redirects, while 304 allows a cached copy to be reused.
- 4xx — the request cannot be fulfilled because of the request or access conditions. Code 403 means access is forbidden, 404 means the resource was not found, and 410 means it is gone.
- 5xx — the server failed to fulfil the request. Code 500 indicates an internal error and 503 indicates temporary unavailability.
Checking a Joomla website
Inspect the actual response in the Network panel of browser developer tools. For Joomla pages, check both the initial response and the final destination after redirects. A page displaying “404” may incorrectly return 200. This is known as a soft 404.
After changing URLs in Joomla, test old links, new destinations and redirect chains. A 500 response alone does not identify the cause: application, PHP and web server logs are needed. A 503 maintenance response may include a Retry-After header.
Conclusion
An HTTP status code describes the request outcome rather than the page design. Checking it helps diagnose navigation, access and server problems.
