Bootstrap is a collection of CSS and JavaScript tools for web interfaces. It provides a grid, utility classes and reusable components. In Joomla, a template or extension may use Bootstrap, but its presence and version depend on the site.
Grid and components
Bootstrap 5’s grid uses Flexbox and typically divides a row into 12 columns. Breakpoints adapt block widths and placement to screen sizes. Components include buttons, forms, cards, tabs and modal dialogs.
CSS controls presentation, while interactive components may need JavaScript. Bootstrap 5 does not require jQuery. Some components, such as tooltips, need Popper, which is included in the bundle build.
Bootstrap in Joomla
Before customising Joomla, establish which resources the active template loads. Bootstrap generations use different classes and attributes. Markup for one version may behave incorrectly with another.
Joomla extension developers should account for Web Asset Manager and dependencies. Loading another Bootstrap copy over the template’s version can cause style conflicts and duplicate event handling.
Checking the interface
A ready-made component does not guarantee an accessible page. Check form labels, contrast, keyboard operation, modal focus and mobile layouts. Load only required resources and test affected controls after updates.
Summary
Bootstrap speeds up Joomla interface development. Compatibility depends on the version, correct asset loading and testing components within the selected template.
